EDUCATIONAL CHANGE:  A GLOBAL CHALLENGE
Philippe Herzog

Changes in technology and globalization are calling for deep-seated transformations in our national education systems. Education has become of major significance in economic competition. At the same time, and to live their lives freely and responsibly, individuals must be equipped with substantially improved skills and knowledge. How can we find a balance between competitive forces, which select excellence, and a renewed perspective on the public good in order to combat exclusion and to restore social advancement? This dilemma permeates my thoughts about the nature of the knowledge society as a challenge of civilization, about the reforms in which I stress the crucial importance of educational content and, finally, about the role of the European Union as a catalyst and driving force, which I believe should be considerably reinforced, in bringing about a new cultural and educational Renaissance.
